Body Mapping
The Body in Motion
Body Mapping is a somatic (mind-body) practice, developed from decades of technique and scientific study. What we know is that the brain creates neural maps that represent bodily function and structures, which then determines how we move our bodies. When a musician’s physical self-representation (their body map) is adequate and accurate, then movement at our instrument can be effective, efficient, and safe.
Body Mapping instructors work with musicians to achieve freedom of movement that enhances the ability for musical expression, uncovers key answers to move beyond limitations, and avoids the risk of pain and injury. The quality of movement for musicians is critical, because movement is the very foundation upon which all forms of musical communication and expression are built.
Body Mapping is for you if:
-you are a musician (instrumentalist, vocalist, conductor, or composer) with at least 3 years musical experience
-you experience pain or fatigue quickly or often
-you have back, shoulder, hand, or neck pain
-you experience performance anxiety that inhibits your performance
-you would like to improve awareness of your playing
-you would like to listen more effectively to students or other musicians you are playing with
-you wish to play your instrument with more ease
-you would like to feel more connected to your music-making
-you would like to overcome any limitations that inhibit your goal expression
-you have been injured in the past, or wish to avoid injury
If you would like to gain a better understanding of how your body works, how it applies to your music-making, and how to practice and perform with freedom of movement and freedom of judgement, then Body Mapping is for you.
